BIG STIR RECORDS is proud to present the fourth in our Digital Singles Series, "Mikey & Murdercat" b/w "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" by THE EX TEENS! The single is available for preorder now and officially released on November 16, 2018.
As with the first release in the series ("Goodguy Sun" from KARLA KANE), the new single ties in with the forthcoming BIG STIR MAGAZINE #3, a special "Pets of Pop" issue for which Teens frontman SIMON GLICKMAN contributed a piece about the genesis of the song.
We absolutely love THE EX TEENS. They were recommended to us by JOSH GORDON of THE LIVING DOLLS for the Big Stir Burbank live series and we were intrigued by the involvement of CHRIS SILAGYI of 20/20 on guitar. Silagyi and the whole band shine, but Glickman steals the show as a natural frontman like they don't make anymore. He oozes charisma, passion, snark and vulnerability in equal measures. And the songs are sharp, funny, and at times inspirational. In short they put on a hell of a show and are among our favorite LA live acts.
Writining about "Mikey" for Big Stir Magazine, Simon explains: "The song was inspired by two felines, both of whom belonged to the late mother of my friend Lisa, and who lived in the ancestral house bequeathed to Lisa in Eastern Washington, just by the swelling banks of the Methow River. Mikey (male) and Willie (female) lived and cuddled and hunted on and around the generous property in the Northwestern countryside. In the evenings they would curl up at our feet, adorable furballs, as we enjoyed our nightly libations. One day, after lurking with lethal patience beneath her mistress’ freshly installed bird feeder, Willie savaged a finch and dropped its wretched form on the doorstep to die. That duality—fearsome predator/chuffling housepet—struck a chord with me, and that got put together with some other chords and some words to make this song. I think of it as a sort of feline 'The Boys Are Back in Town.'”
“Willie the Murdercat has since gone on to her reward. Mikey abides. This song is a tribute to them both and the sweetness and violence that roils and purrs in all of nature.”
The B-side is an ace cover of the GENE CLARK-penned BYRDS classic “I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better” highlighted by Silagyi's guitar and perhaps leant a political edge by the vocal performance... ?
THE EX TEENS are: Simon Glickman (vocals), Chris Silagyi (guitars and keys), Jim Cushinery (bass), and Joey Ponchetti (drums). The single was produced by The Ex Teens and Steve Kravac. For more, see:
