BIG STIR RECORDS is thrilled to present the debut single from THE KARIANNES! The 17th in our DIGITAL SINGLES SERIES features two brand new recordings: the band original "This Song Is a Cure" b/w "Every Word Means No" (yes, the Let's Active classic). It's available for download as of Friday, February 22 (on the eve of the band's performance at BIG STIR BURBANK)!
Who, you may ask, are THE KARIANNES? That cannot be told without using the words "international super group" and "all girl band" but they're much more, much better, and a lot more fun than those terms might suggest! Alternately fronted by Australian singer-songwriter MARYANNE WINDOW (who's worked with Mary Lou Lord and Monique Brumby) and LA native KAREN BASSET (an early and current player in The Pandoras, member of The Rebel Pebbles and currently ubiquitous on the LA scene, also playing with The Arthur Alexander Band and the newly-minted project The Test Pressings with Robbie Rist and John Borack). The name THE KARIANNES (which is, incidentally, the best band name ever) is an amalgam of the frontwomens' names, nodding also to drummer SHERI (ANN) KAPLAN WEINSTEIN and bassist SANDY NEADES – it was originally the title of a temporary YouTube playlist, assembled by Karen, of songs for the band to learn, but it inevitably stuck when the time for the full band to play together live arrived in 2018.
WINDOW and BASSET first collaborated through the online music collaboration community Theme Music five years ago, around the same time that WINDOW connected, via Mary Lou Lord, with Boston punk/garage scene veteran NEADES (Bosley, Sugabomb, Heidi) on a Los Angeles holiday -- they met at a Redd Kross show, of course. In 2017 BASSET and WINDOW joned forces for a performance at Rodney Bingenheimer's annual holiday bash and had so much fun they vowed to do it again. Maryanne's 2018 visit to LA afforded that opportunity: a pair of live gigs (including a maiden flight at BIG STIR BURBANK) and recording sessions (at Karen's home studio) were scheduled with Sandy on bass, and SHERI KAPLAN WEINSTEIN (Hardly Dangerous, 2hot2handle), who had also played with The Pandoras from 1987 to 1990 but never at the same time as Karen until the advent of the band's recent reboot, on drums. Thus THE KARIANNES were properly born, and beyond the rapturously received live performances, these recordings mark their official debut!
On the A-side, MARYANNE sings her original compositon "This Song Is a Cure", a highlight of the 2018 live shows featuring a sly nod to the group referenced in its title and the full band contributing to the recording. The B-side features a cover of the Mitch Easter-penned college rock classic "Every Word Means No" with KAREN on lead vocals and Maryanne taking on bass duties. Both sides were produced by the band and engineered and mixed by Basset.
BIG STIR RECORDS is proud to introduce THE KARIANNES! It is to be hoped that more is to come, but for now, the single can be found at:
