IN DEED (Uppsala, Sweden)

At the turn of the millennium, IN DEED made a big beautiful noise in their native Sweden with their debut album At 4000 Meters, garnering national radio play, festival appearances and rapturous reviews. If you were fortunate enough to hear the record, it might well have been your favorite of the year for its seamless confluence of classic '60s pop and garage rock and '90s indie edge, with touches of shoegaze and girl-group sweetness. Think Debbie Harry fronting The Posies, the finest moments of The Primitives or Velocity Girl, or The Bangles with bite: fuzztones, twelve-strings, farfisas, harmonies, and timeless hooks, vocals at turns lovely and lacerating, with melodies to match.

Nearly two decades on, the Uppsala-based indie pop combo has reemerged with their charm and drive utterly intact. The core trio of original members -- Linda Karlsberg (vocals), Marcus Segersvärd (drums), and Richard Öhrn (guitar) – have stormed back onto the live scene, joined on stage by Jens Siilakka (bass guitar) and Johan Helander (keyboard/guitar). The lapse of years means little to a band whose sound is so timeless, and it shows on the new recordings which stand up to, and even transcend, the debut.

A new vinyl-only LP, Everest, reached Swedish and UK audiences in 2018. Videos for the achingly gorgeous "Don't Need, Don't Care" and the driving "Heart Attack" gave international audiences a look at the band as In Deed took to Swedish and UK stages with a vengeance. The record reflects that energy, with Segersvärd's driving drums anchoring a master class on how guitar pop should be done. Öhrn remains an encyclopedia of tasteful power pop, psych, garage and new wave guitar tones and hooks, and Karlsberg's singing is as commanding and versatile as ever – plaintively wounded on the jangly "According to You", and ferocious on rockers like "Over and Over" and the galloping "Flavour of the Month".

Everest in its original form reopened eager ears, landing among other honors the #2 spot on International Pop Overthrow Festival founder David Bash's Top Albums of 2018. Before that year had even ended, though, In Deed had caught the rapt attention of the growing Big Stir Records label in far-away Burbank, California. Plans were quickly hatched to introduce IN DEED to a wider audience through an all new and unique US version of Everest, for the first time on CD and featuring three brand new tracks added to its running order. It was a hit -- the band followed up the release with their first ever US tour (alongside BSR labelmates THE ARMOIRES), winning new fans who all hoped that the heights of Everest were not the end of IN DEED's ascent. Those hopes are now being rewarded in 2022 as a new single, "Don't Kill The Babe", inaugurates a string of standalone releases throughout the year, leading to very special collection next year. Stay tuned as the next phase of the IN DEED story unfolds!

Big Stir Records is delighted to welcome back Uppsala, Sweden's indie rock darlings (and ours), as IN DEED returns with a brand new single! “Don't Kill The Babe” is out Friday, June 3 and up for pre-order at www.bigstirrecords.bandcamp.com (and everywhere digital music is sold or streamed) now. It's the first new music from the band since their acclaimed hit album EVEREST received its worldwide release with Big Stir in 2019, and the first in a series of new singles leading up to something very special from IN DEED in 2023.

“Don't Kill The Babe” is instantly recognizable as classic IN DEED. It's a pop gem of bouncing beats, swirling guitars and rollicking organ, topped by LINDA KARLSBERG's lilting vocal, adopting an almost bluesy bite at times. The song races from intro to coda in less time than it takes to describe, leaving the listener eager to spin it again right away. Evocative of The Primitives at their best with hints of the '60s sounds of The Zombies and a '90s alt-rock kick, it's a quintessential IN DEED track for a good reason... it is, in many ways, the blueprint, as Karlsberg explains.

“It was one of the first songs I ever wrote, and it's been in the making for our whole career, it feels like,” says Linda. “It’s 2:30 minutes of catchy pop to be played over and over again. Put it on repeat and shout it out loud - 'Will you show me how you do it, just show me how you do it!'” The new recording was crafted by the core group who has powered In Deed 's melodic drive since their 2001 debut At 4000 Meters: Karlsberg, drummer MARCUS SEGERSVÄRD, and guitarist/vocalist RICHARD ÖHRN, with Niclas Malmberg providing the Hammond organ hooks and Magnus Kotlerud Lindström on bass and backing vocals.

It's a welcome return for the band and slice of pitch perfect pop for summer, in Sweden and all over the world. And it's just the beginning: “Don't Kill The Babe” is the first in a series of standalone singles leading up to a 2023 “Best Of” collection summarizing IN DEED's unique sound and songwriting, from their early century bow through their triumphant return and beyond, including the new tracks as well as rarities culled from hard-to-find EPs and singles never before heard outside of Scandinavia. The buzz begins now, and won't be stopping any time soon: from 4000 Meters to Everest to today, IN DEED still have new heights to scale, and Big Stir Records can't wait to share the full ascent with the world.

Uppsala, Sweden's IN DEED, purveyors of timeless indie-pop of the highest order, are embarking on an improbable and thrilling third act with the release of their album EVEREST for the first time on CD in a completely new configuration with three brand new tracks, expanded from the Swedish vinyl-only version, on Los Angeles-based BIG STIR RECORDS.

Drawing on the history of melodic rock from The Zombies to The Posies and beyond, with echoes of female-fronted luminaries like Blondie, The Bangles and The Primitives, the new release sparkles with an energy and wit that easily stands up to and transcends those influences. At turns it's sly, tender and ferocious in the tradition of both Swedish pop and decades of hooks and harmony from the US, UK and beyond: a thing of beauty that will capture ears and hearts worldwide.

IN DEED made their brash arrival on the Swedish rock scene in 2001 with At 4000 Meters, an album embraced by the Swedish music press which has stood the test of time as an underheard classic. The story could have ended there, but thankfully the group has re-emerged on the live and recording scene in recent years, with their creative and performance energy undiminished. The arrival on vinyl of the original Everest album, available in their native country and in limited quantities in the UK, returned In Deed to their status of darlings of the Swedish press and radio community without missing a beat, and ushered in an overdue international appreciation of their music. Rave reviews and Top 10 placements on Year's Best Albums lists from the likes of David Bash of the International Pop Overthrow Festival heralded, as the title of one new song has it, “Another Start” for the band.

The vitality of the material on the new record was solid evidence that this was no nostalgia trip. Linda Karlsberg's vocals range from a vulnerable coo on the likes of the jangly, Mersey-inflected “According to You” and the frankly gorgeous “Five Times a Day” to a searingly fierce howl (as heard on the single “Heart Attack” and the Farfisa-driven “Flavour of the Month”). Guitarist Richard Öhrn remains an encyclopedia of guitar tones and textures spanning the length and breadth of modern pop, and drummer Marcus Segersvärd likewise shuffles, grooves and pounds as each tune demands. All three core members contribute tunes to the In Deed songbook, while Jens Siilakka (bass) and Johan Hellander (keys and additional guitar) round out the celebrated live version of the group.

Big Stir Records founders Christina Bulbenko and Rex Broome enter the picture in the summer of 2018. A superb Swedish pop band being on every fledgling indie label's short list of improbable dreams, and In Deed wishing to get Everest to an international audience and onto CD for the first time, the match was, as with much of BRS's expansion from its LA roots, a natural. The band's ambitions reached beyond a simple reissue, and to the label's delight they came armed with three brand new tracks and the concept of completely reconfiguring Everest into a new animal altogether. Label co-founder Broome counts the assembly of the album into its “Capitol version” as the most fun he's ever had on the business side of the music scene.

The resulting new edition is as essential as the original. Kicking off with the bracing new “Another Start” and the delicate “Five Times a Day”, rushing headlong into the original lead track “What Once Was” and the soaring recent single “Don't Need, Don't Care”, this Everest has the hooks to pull in new fans and reveal new facets of the band to the faithful. The additions of “Fantastic”, whose snarky sweetness brings the band's fellow nationals The Cardigans to mind, and the deceptively giddy current single “I'm Alright (When I'm with You)” make for a cohesive and absorbing album in the best pop-rock tradition: the new version still clocks in at under 43 minutes and without a trace of bonus-track fatigue. Everest is, in either format, a singular record for the ages.

Plans for the band's first-ever US tour and a return to perform once again for their ever-adoring UK fans make 2019 a watershed year for In Deed. If it's been too long in coming, it's still a dream come true, and Big Stir Records is extraordinarily proud of our role in bringing it to you!

IN DEED, Uppsala, Sweden's finest purveyors of sweet and spiky indie-pop and the latest official addition to the Big Stir Records roster, makes their label debut with this week's 16th BIG STIR DIGITAL SINGLE, "Don't Need, Don't Care" b/w a non-album version of "Marry Myself"! The single will be released Friday, February 15 and is available for pre-order now!

"Don't Need, Don't Care" received enthusiastic airplay throughout the band's home country and beyond as the lead single from the original 2018 release of the band's second LP Everest, and is accompanied by a music video. Written by guitarist RICHARD ÖHRN and passionately sung by frontwoman LINDA KARLSBERG, it's a soaring slice of melodic magic, a classic brushoff tune for the ages. Everest (which garnered a number of honors including the Number 2 slot on International Pop Overthrow Festival main man DAVID BASH's Top 100 releases for 2018) has until now only been physically available on vinyl in Eurpopean markets, is set for its first release on CD with a completely revamped track list and new material from BIG STIR RECORDS in Spring of 2019.

The B-side "Marry Myself" appears here in a version previously available only on IN DEED's now-out-of-print 2000 debut EP Apology. It's significantly different from the version on the At 4000 Meters album which features cheeky spoken word intro and outro passages: this version is flat out rock from start to finish, and, like the A-side, clocks in at under 3 minutes of hooks and harmony, propelled by MARCUS SEGERSVÄRD's taut drumming. (At 4000 Meters can be found as a digital download at the Big Stir Records website.)

Much more is coming from IN DEED and BSR in 2019, including the new CD as well as the band's first ever US tour dates in the fall. Stand by for the official release date of the expanded Everest album and other news from our Swedish darlings as Big Stir Records is thrilled to debut IN DEED!
