The fourth in a series of all-new-for-2026 singles from Power Pop Hall Of Famers THE SPONGETONES is on the way as the band continue to push their legacy forward into a fifth decade. THE SPONGETONES – founding singer-songwriters JAMIE HOOVER (guitar), STEVE STOECKEL (bass), PAT WALTERS (guitar) and recently-inducted drummer ERIC WILLHELM – have been on quite a roll since the 2025 release of their hit career-encompassing live album THE 40th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT... AND BEYOND. In fact, “beyond” is where they've been thriving, first with three new studio cuts issued as singles and appended to the live album as bonus tracks, and then without skipping a beat into the current series of standalone singles. The renewed excitement, creativity and collaborative spirit have been palpable as, much like the British Invasion bands who initially inspired them and mining many of the same traditions and sounds, THE SPONGETONES have delivered three more consecutive hits to the global indie rock airwaves, each with its own distinct flavor but unmistakably cut from the same cloth as their early classics.

“The Music At The Close” makes it four. Kicking off with minor key guitar arpeggios and the tellingly timely lyrics “Ignorance and innocence, the belles of last year's ball / Look on in consternation as we play the hand they dealt,” it's a distinctly different animal from the last few singles. Where “So Long” boasted Zombies-like whimsy, “(I Really Need) To Kiss You” radiated youthful exuberance, and “Lifetimeline” floated on sweetly psychedelic swirls of sound, the new song bespeaks a kind of tensely apocalyptic resignation. Bassist STEVE STOECKEL, who sings lead here, explains the song's origins:

“This is a collaboration between Joel Tinnel and me. Joel had the title and the first two verses, and I was drawn in immediately and came up with some spooky music.” Of the meaning behind the title and the lyrics, he adds, “The subject inspiration is obvious, and metaphors abound for the doomed ship and the new world right ahead. There’s hope in the debris, however, and that’s part of what I take from this.” Thus the choruses break through with big harmonies and and major key relief, and the bridge delights with Pet Sounds vocal and instrumental flourishes chased by a brief, sweet Spanish guitar solo. The tale and the song still end on a note of uncertainty, punctuated by an ominous organ and tom tom coda, but perhaps there's no other way to close out this Titanic-inspired parable: it's sharply observed, subtle in its imagery, and like many a SPONGETONES tune, communicates volumes in its under-three-minute runtime and remains stuck in the listener's head long after the fadeout.
