THE LEGAL MATTERS (Michigan)

THE LEGAL MATTERS isn't just a band, it's a meeting of the minds of three notable figures on the Midwest power pop scene. Keith Klingensmith was a member of Hippodrome and The Phenomenal Cats and runs the indie pop label Futureman Records, Andy Reed was the leader of the group An American Underdog, and Chris Richards was Klingensmith's Hippodrome/PhenomCats bandmate and led his own group, Chris Richards & the Subtractions. The trio made an impressive debut with their self-titled first album in 2014, and sounded even stronger and more ambitious on 2016's Conrad (issued by the well-respected independent label Omnivore Recordings)  and 2021's Chapter Three. Over a decade along and with a remarkable bounty of critical accolades to their credit, the band’s renowned  chemistry is more potent than ever as they ready their fourth album (and their first for Big Stir Records) for its keenly-awaited early 2026 release.

The core trio of The Legal Matters first came together in early 2013, when Richards’ band cut an EP of covers titled That Covers That 2: Electric Boogaloo. Reed took part in those sessions, and when Klingensmith and Richards began blocking out plans for a new Phenomenal Cats record, they invited Reed to join them in the studio. The three songwriters began exchanging demos, and by the time they all gathered at Reed's studio, Reed Recording Company, they’d realized that this music was a different animal than that of The Phenomenal Cats, and with this in mind, exchanged the previous Kinks-inspired name for a new one, The Legal Matters, based on their shared love of The Who. Those nods to British Invasion giants hint at the band’s sound, and you’d be hard pressed to find an assessment of the band that doesn’t reference the key bands of the power pop sound throughout the decades, from Badfinger and Big Star to Teenage Fanclub and Fountains Of Wayne. But critics and fans alike have known from the start that the combined songwriting and performing voices of Klingensmith, Reed and Richards amount to an unmistakable identity of its own, and one that would make THE LEGAL MATTERS one of the most celebrated names in the modern indie pop pantheon.

The band’s self-titled debut, recorded in just six days during the coldest and snowiest winter in Michigan's history and released on Futureman, won enthusiastic reviews in the indie music press, with Popdose calling it a “top flight killer debut” and “spectacular,” leading in short order to the equally well-received Conrad on Omnivore (deemed “glorious” and “immaculately crafted” in Elmore Magazine). The trio kept themselves busy with individual projects over the next four years, but the wait for new Legal Matters music was rewarded with 2021’s Chapter Three, which saw Klingensmith, Reed, and Richards joined by drummer Donny Brown (best known for his work with The Verve Pipe). By that time both the acclaim – including an Album of the Year citation from MusicTap’s Rob Ross – and the time between records were to be expected, which brings us to the present day and the impending 2026 release of the fourth Legal Matters album. Already heralded by the new single “Everybody Knows,” the new record draws its title, LOST AT SEA, from a line in a key track, as what Richards calls “a fitting comment about our current political state.” And so it goes with The Legal Matters: a sound that taps the whole of pop rock history, keen observations that speak to life in the present day, and a body of work that genuinely deserves to be considered timeless. Big Stir Records is proud to welcome them aboard as they continue to push that legacy forward.

Big Stir Records is delighted to announce the release date for the new album from Michigan indie pop all-stars THE LEGAL MATTERS. The band's fourth full-length record (and their first for BSR) LOST AT SEA will see worldwide release on Vinyl, CD and Streaming on February 27. Already previewed by the indie hit single “Everybody Knows” with “The Message” soon to follow, the album is a triumph of sharp hooks, songwriting and performances even by the high standards set by the band on their acclaimed previous albums. LOST AT SEA is up for pre-order and presave now:

https://orcd.co/legalmatters-las

It's become traditional to refer to THE LEGAL MATTERS as a “midwestern power pop supergroup,” but they've long since transcended that label. It's true that when the band formed in 2013, KEITH KLINGENSMITH, ANDY REED and CHRIS RICHARDS were already key players on the Michigan scene, with a combined pedigree encompassing beloved bands like The Phenomenal Cats, An American Underdog, and Richards' ongoing solo career with The Subtractions. But they've undeniably become a force of their own, and more than the sum of their parts, over the course of releasing three of the most celebrated indie pop albums of recent decades: their self-titled 2014 debut, 2016's CONRAD (one of the few albums by emerging artists to be backed by reissue powerhouse Omnivore Recordings) and 2021's CHAPTER THREE. All three garnered critical praise and berths on Year's Best Albums list across the indie pop world from Popdose and MusicTAP to the UK's I Don't Hear A Single and beyond, and the list of classic artists artists referenced in those glowing notices – Big Star, Badfinger, Teenage Fanclub, Fountains Of Wayne, Crowded House – does provide some idea of what to expect. What sets THE LEGAL MATTERS apart, though, is the magic of their chemistry as songwriters, harmonizing vocalists and players.

If the spark of three world-class creators pushing each other to ever greater heights is what's fueled the band's ascent, fans can expect an even deeper level of collaboration to shine on LOST AT SEA. The title, to be clear, is what RICHARDS calls “a fitting comment about our current political state” rather than a self-assessment of the band, who are if anything more on course and full-steam-ahead than ever before. In fact, a more communal creative approach was part of the goal for the writing and recording sessions that yielded the ten glorious tracks that make up the album. “We wanted to approach this one in a different way,” says RICHARDS. “The idea was that each of us would bring in an idea, riff, concept or lyrical hook and build the song together as a group as opposed to demoing fully realized songs. As a result, Lost at Sea is easily the most collaborative record in the Legal Matters canon.”

Fans have already heard one sterling example of the strategy on the lush, heartfelt lead single “Everybody Knows” which also serves as LOST AT SEA's opening track. With its yearning lyrical and instrumental nods to the music that inspires and unites the trio (Badfinger being a key touchstone) it just might be the quintessential LEGAL MATTERS song, but they're just getting started. “The Message,” next in both the track sequence and on the singles release schedule, ratchets up the tension and addresses some of the cultural unease alluded to by the album title. Also slated to hit the airwaves and streaming services in advance of the album is “It Doesn't Matter” which Reed calls “our rockiest tune” and Richards labels “one of the more anthemic tracks we’ve ever gone for.” Combining a Spoon-inspired riff cooked up by Reed with a chorus from Richards and lyrics primarily crafted by Klingensmith and ultimately evoking Split Enz at their best, It's emblematic of the alchemy the band have achieved on LOST AT SEA.

Those tracks are just the tip of the album's iceberg (to extend the nautical metaphor of the title). The band's renowned harmonies have never sounded better, and with the remarkably versatile Donny Brown returning from the Chapter Three sessions to handle all the drumming, there seem to be no limits on THE LEGAL MATTERS' collective ambitions. “Shake This Feeling” finds them in cinematic, Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell territory, while “Temporary Thing” melds touches of rootsy country to classic pop with just a touch of noirish mystery. Future single “Let Me Explain” goes full-on Abbey Road to jaw-dropping effect, while the pitch-perfect pop of “Stuck With Me” is front-to-back harmonies, inspired in equal parts by The Kinks and XTC (but pure Legal Matters in execution).

LOST AT SEA closes with a trio of tracks that continue to reveal both its depth and diversity of musical textures. “Marching On” takes another eagle-eyed look at the needlessly fragmented cultural landscape of today, its ever-shifting arrangement and surging tempo building a tension that matches the urgency of its subject matter. The controlled chaos of its climax dovetails into the stripped down beauty of “Slow Down,” a ballad that evokes the most tender moments of Big Star. And the record concludes with “The Exit Signs,” an ornately arranged retro pop masterpiece and prime example of the band's unique modular approach to writing on the album. “It has all of our influences in one track. It’s a great way to wrap up the LP,” says Reed, while Klingensmith cites it as his favorite of the new tunes.

Those who have followed THE LEGAL MATTERS since the beginning will find everything they love about the band on LOST AT SEA, while recognizing it as a major leap forward on their collaborative journey. For lovers of the hooks and harmonies that define the classic pop and power pop sounds who've somehow missed the band until now, it's an introduction to one of the finest practitioners on the modern indie rock landscape. The songs of the record tap into the whole of pop rock history, add keen observations that speak to life in the present day, and add up to a work that genuinely deserves to be considered timeless. Big Stir Records is proud to welcome THE LEGAL MATTERS aboard as they continue to push that legacy forward.

THE LEGAL MATTERS, the acclaimed Michigan indie pop maestros with the new album LOST AT SEA announced and on its way on Vinyl, CD and Streaming in February, bring you one more preview single from the record: “It Doesn't Matter,” out February 20th and up for pre-order and presave now. It's the followup to the first two indie hits from the album, December's “Everybody Knows” and January's “The Message,” and it kicks up the rock factor as the buzz builds for the full-length release.

https://orcd.co/legalmatters-idm

Anticipation in the global indie pop community is certainly high for the first album from THE LEGAL MATTERS (ANDY REED, CHRIS RICHARDS and KEITH KLINGENSMITH) in half a decade. The two preview singles released thus far, the soaring ballad “Everybody Knows” and the tensely foreboding “The Message,” have certainly lived up to or even exceeded expectations, and “It Doesn't Matter” follows suit while demonstrating the exciting variety of sounds fans can expect upon LOST AT SEA's February 27 release. This is “the rocker”: Reed calls it “our rockiest tune” while Richards singles it out as “one of the more anthemic tracks we've ever gone for.” Opening with a steady solo drum beat and building layers of bass, guitar, keys and vocals as it unfolds until crashing into a explosion of harmonies and power chords, all before hitting the chorus, it's a real rush of hooks and energy. There's a new wave vibe that recalls The Cars and Split Enz and a dose of '90s guitar power that evokes Fountains Of Wayne, but those unmistakable harmonies couldn't be anyone other than The Legal Matters at their best.

Like all of the tunes on LOST AT SEA, “It Doesn't Matter” came into being via a new and wildly successful experiment in closer collaboration between THE LEGAL MATTERS' core trio, as Richards explains. “Andy played the opening riff/verse concept during a writing session, and we all loved where this little Spoon-inspired riff was going. The next day, I was driving back for the next get-together (roughly a two-hour drive for me) and a chorus popped into my head. So, I did what any normal person would do: reach for my phone while driving and try to record the idea. It worked, and we were able to assemble some guitar parts underneath it to make this elevated chorus.”

Reed agrees: “I had this dancy riff idea that I had been messing around with for a while. It didn’t feel Legal Matters-ish at first, but once Chris had an idea for a chorus, it felt like us. I’m really happy with this one.” The tune having been melded together out of musical concepts from two of the members, Klingensmith stepped in to pen most of the lyrics. And it wouldn't do to leave out the dynamic, bravura drum work from Donny Brown which anchors all of the tracks on LOST AT SEA and especially shines here, as the tight groove that kicks off the tune expands into the pure rock chorus and expertly follows the surging arrangement throughout “It Doesn't Matter.” Taken together with the two prior singles, the new track makes it abundantly clear that, as reliably superb as they've always been, THE LEGAL MATTERS have leveled up once again, and it's only a matter of weeks until the new album makes the case for all to hear: LOST AT SEA is one of the best places to be on the global indie pop ocean this year.

With a new album from beloved Michigan indie pop heroes THE LEGAL MATTERS announced and up for pre-order, Big Stir Records is proud to roll out the second single from the record. “The Message,” the followup to last month's surprise indie hit “Everybody Knows,” is out January 30, with a month to go before the release of the band's fourth album LOST AT SEA, and up for pre-order and presave now:

https://orcd.co/legalmatters-message

December 2025 brought the welcome and long overdue return of THE LEGAL MATTERS – ANDY REED, CHRIS RICHARDS and KEITH KLINGENSMITH – with the indie hit single “Everybody Knows,” the first new music from the trio since their widely-hailed third album CHAPTER THREE in 2021. It was a sign of thing to come, as recent weeks have brought the official announcement of the forthcoming full-length album LOST AT SEA, due February 27 on Vinyl, CD and Streaming as the band's debut on Big Stir. The new single “The Message” shows off the diversity of approaches on display on the album: like “Everybody Knows,” it's drenched with layers of jaw-dropping harmonies and guitars and centered on an instantly-memorable melody. But while the first single was achingly beautiful and ultimately uplifting, there's a dark and mysterious undertone to “The Message,” an urgency that builds throughout the tune and reaches a fever pitch after the song quiets to a whisper and then builds back up to a thunderous coda with interweaving, call-and-response vocals repeating the hook “Let the message control you” as guitars saw away until the fade. It's a thrilling journey, but what's it all about?

The band's ANDY REED offers some insight. “This was an interesting song from day one, but was missing something. I had a strong melody but no lyrical direction. In today’s political landscape, I’ve grown frustrated with the hypocritical, religious types. It’s not aimed at religion specifically, just those who weaponize it.” Indeed, while the lyrics on the album are often of the classic pop bent, with beautifully crafted songs of relationships and Kinks-worthy character studies, there's enough of an undercurrent of cultural unease that the title LOST AT SEA is described by RICHARDS as “a fitting comment about our current political state.”

Reed goes on the detail the process behind the writing and recording of the tune: “We all chipped in on lyrics. Chris has a stronger voice than I do, so I wanted him to sing the chorus lead. It has a bit more punch that way. We're all super happy with the end result.” That sense of collaboration has defined THE LEGAL MATTERS from the beginning, and while it's always given the band a power that places them among the most thrilling and original practitioners of the power pop sound, now or throughout the genre's history, it's never been more apparent than on the new album. Get “The Message,” and pack your bags for a journey that will find you LOST AT SEA with THE LEGAL MATTERS on what's sure to be one of the most-lauded (and loved) albums of 2026.

BIG STIR RECORDS is extraordinarily proud to welcome ultra-acclaimed Michigan indie pop heroes THE LEGAL MATTERS to our roster with the release of “Everybody Knows,” the band's latest single and their first new music in over four years. Out December 5, it's an early preview of their forthcoming fourth album (and their first for BSR), due out in early 2026. The single is up for pre-order and presave now:

“Imagine if a sound could take you back to the place where you came from,” goes the aching, harmony-laden chorus to “Everybody Knows,” and it's an instant signature moment for THE LEGAL MATTERS. Over a decade after the band – KEITH KLINGENSMITH, ANDY REED and CHRIS RICHARDS – coalesced from the lineups of three already-esteemed Michigan indie pop outfits, their mutual love for the music that shaped them still resounds throughout their material, never more so than on this track. The band may be named in tribute to an early track by The Who, but it's big early '7os rock that informs “Everybody Knows,” so it's no surprise when Chris Richards names a key power pop progenitor band when discussing the writing and recording of the tune.

“I had this verse/chorus bit for quite awhile, dating back to sessions for out last album in 2021, but couldn’t land on a lyrical hook and always just moved on,” says Chris. “When I brought this one to the guys, we went down a Badfinger route, and the result became the leadoff track on the new record. I wrote the melody to the bridge the day before the session, as I’d been trying to fit a middle eight in there for some time but always hit a very thick brick wall. It all came together right then and there, as is so often the case with The Legal Matters.”

In the time between their acclaimed self-titled 2014 debut album and the present day, THE LEGAL MATTERS have released two more albums – CONRAD in 2016 on the widely-respected Ominvore Recordings, and 2021's CHAPTER THREE on Klingensmith's own superb indie label Futureman – each more acclaimed than the last. But even with their reputation as one of the leading lights of 21st century guitar pop secure, Andy, Chris and Keith still keep chasing that sound, and the concluding lines to “Everybody Knows” communicate the reason with beautiful urgency: “It means so much to me.” With the new single, they join the Big Stir Records roster, home to Power Pop Hall of Famers (The Spongetones, The Flashcubes, Splitsville) and fellow acclaimed indie pop lifers like The Corner Laughers and sparkle*jets u.k., with another triumph waiting in the wings: the new album LOST AT SEA, slated for an early 2026 release. We'll be honored to bring it to you.
